Baron & Baroness

  

The Baron and Baroness of River Haven are appointed by the crown of Lochac after a poll of the Populace is taken to get the popular choice. They serve a similar role to the King and Prince but they are local people who are here most of the time. The Baron and Baroness are the representatives that reflect the royal presence in the barony.

Seneschal

The Seneschal is the administrative head of the group. Every group from Kingdom to College has a Seneschal. They handle the legal paperwork and the day to day running of the group.

Reeve

The Reeve is the Treasurer of the group. Every group which has its own bank account has a Reeve to keep track of the cash.

Herald

A Herald makes announcements, runs courts and is consulted on matters of heraldry. The Herald (the officer whose area of responsibility is heraldry) processes the paperwork.

Hospitaller

A Hospitaller is responsible for the hire gear that is loaned out to newcomers when they are getting started. They also usually have handouts for newcomers.

Arts and Sciences Officer

The Arts and Sciences Master / Mistress is responsible for keeping track of the crafts and artistic efforts of the group. They don’t regulate anything or run all the workshops, but they do run competitions and they usually know who to contact when a particular expertise is required.

Baronial Marshal

The Marshal is responsible for the arts of heavy fighting combat in the group. They can authorise and inspect fighters. The Marshals are not referees (although they are sometimes consulted as such) they are more there to see that the rules are observed and that everything is safe.

Marshals (not the officer) are always needed and if you wish to be involved in fighting without actually getting hit then this is the way to go.

Rapier Marshal

Captain of the Archers

The Captain is responsible for the arts of Archery combat in the group. They can authorise and inspect fighters. The Captain is not a referee (although they are sometimes consulted as such) they are more there to see that the rules are observed and that everything is safe.

Chronicler

The Chronicler is the person who puts out the newsletter, The River Haven Rag. They are often looking for articles and original artwork.

Constable

The Constable is the person responsible for seeing that sites are safe and waivers are signed at fighting events. They also collect and try to return any lost property that is left behind. Deputies are always needed.

Lists

A List officer is responsible for recording and reporting the outcome of any official fights (tournaments, etc.) and organising who fights who. This officer is a deputy to the Baronial Marshal.

Chirurgeon

The Chirurgeon [ki-er-jun] is mundanely a first aid officer and is responsible for the health wellbeing of the populace at SCA events. All Chirurgeon’s within the Society have various levels of first aid or medical training in the mundane world.

Available Officer Positions

There are a number of other Officer Positions currently available. These positions include

Quartermaster
Deputy Chronicler
Deputy Seneschal – Hall Manager

If you would like to apply for any of these positions, please send your application to the

Quartermaster:
River Haven Quartermaster is required to support the barony by ordering and facilitating suitable storage of baronial assets and consumables at the Lutwyche hall.  This is a deputy officer position, and will reporting monthly to the Seneschal, and to the baronial meeting as required.

The Quartermaster is also expected to liaise with the Hospitaller in the allocation of suitable storage of any materials outside of the Hospitaller room; Stewards to log out and log back in baronial assets and consumables for use at other locations, and other officers and members creating, decorating and using baronial property.

The Quartermaster will assist the Reeve with safe storage, recording and valuing assets for reporting purposes.  The Quartermaster may make recommendations as to appropriate maintenance and upgrades. The workload will vary widely over the year and good communication skills are recommended.

Deputy Chronicler:
This is an assistance role to our current Chronicler. It will involve the recording of the monthly meeting minutes into a pre-defined template and forwarding those minutes to the Chronicler and Seneschal for ratification on the occasions that the Chronicler is unable to attend. Any further requirements will be discussed between yourself and the Chronicler.

Deputy Seneschal – Hall Manager:
The position of Hall Manager encompasses areas regarding the organisation of maintenance and repairs to the hall, its safety equipment and amenities. This is a deputy officer position and will require up-to-date communications and reporting monthly to the Seneschal, and to the baronial meeting as required.

It will include tasks such as gathering quotes and presenting them to the Baronial Council, identifying and arranging repairs, tracking and documenting due dates for equipment/pest inspections, updating the maintenance register, liaising with and organising access for contractors to enter and perform maintenance at the hall. Good communication is essential. DIY and basic maintenance skills would be of benefit, but not necessary.

There are a couple of Officers who would like a deputy. In most cases, you won’t have much to do, just learn the ropes to help out with minor duties.
